UPPER EYEBAGS & UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY: At a glance
The upper eyelid skin is thin and can become saggy with age, or because there is a family trait of having too much upper eyelid skin. Also as we age, the fat underneath the eyelid skin can start to bulge out, especially in the corner of the eye. This gives a tired appearance and heavy feeling in the lids.
Upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), performed by Daniel Saleh, focuses on removing excess skin and, where appropriate, addressing underlying fat. This opens up the eyes and gives a fresher appearance.
Often, patients are happy they can apply mascara without it imprinting on the heavy skin resting on the eyelashes.
The overall success of upper eyelid surgery can also be influenced by the position of the eyebrows and the quality of the skin around the eyes. These factors play an important role in how the eyelids appear both before and after surgery.
Sometimes, as part of the eyebag removal, the brow needs to be tweaked too, to enhance the overall result. In the majority of patients this is safely done under local anaesthetic.

Upper eyebag removal FAQs
Do I have to have stitches removed?
Yes, between 5 and 7 days after your surgery we arrange stitch removal. The small plasters on the sides of your eyes after the surgery are holding the stitch ends down. So it is important to not remove these until we see you. We prefer non dissolving so you don’t get marks either side of the scar which dissolving stiches can leave behind. The stitch removal does not hurt, and takes 10-15 seconds to do in the clinic.
Will my eyes be even after the surgery?
Yes, there are always minor asymmetries in any two-sided surgery. However, these small minor asymmetries would not be typically apparent to you. During the early recovery you will definitely have noticeable asymmetry because one side always swells more than the other, but this settles. Also the scar can be redder on one side versus the other, but they both settle quite quickly in most cases and we are happy for patients to apply makeup once the stitches are removed.
Will I be swollen and bruised and what should I do to recover?
Most patients get quite prominent black eyes in the days after the surgery. Arnica tablets, available at the pharmacy, can be taken the week prior to surgery and the week of your recovery. This reduces swelling and brusing. Cool eye pads can also soothe discomfort and reduce swelling but ice should be avoided to avoid cold burns.
Sleeping with an extra pillow to elevate your head and night is very helpful in reducing the swelling, and we provide some eye ointment to reduce the risks of grtting grittiness in the eyes in the days after surgery.
When can I drive?
Patients can drive after 5-7 days. This is to make sure the eyes aren’t swollen and free form visual disturbance which may invalidate car insurance.
What should I do to recover following upper eyelid surgery?
To recover optimally following upper eyelid or upper eyebag removal surgery, you should follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully to support healing and achieve the best results.
Allied to this, there are certain steps you can actively take to aid your recovery. This includes Keeping your head elevated when resting or sleeping, avoiding strenuous activity in the early days, and using any prescribed ointments as directed.
It is also advisable to protect the eyes from irritation and avoid rubbing the area while it heals. Swelling and bruising will gradually settle over time, and most patients can begin returning to normal daily activities as recovery progresses.
